Self-driving cars will make cars more efficient, but not nearly as space-efficient as we need in dense urban environment. Even if you multiply the efficiency of cars by 2 (ambitious considering you still need to share the road with pedestrians, cycles...), you are still an order of magnitude or two less space-efficient than mass transit.
- CamperBob2 10y ago$50 billion will buy a helluva lot of overpasses and underpasses for bike and pedestrian traffic. Get rid of traffic signals on the streets themselves, and a 2x multiplier in efficiency is a gross underestimate of what can be achieved. One of the biggest challenges, of course, will be to avoid what we've done in the past, which is allowing limited-access highways to act like impassable walls.
