It actually seems that Søren may have been tripping over his own ego while falling prey to a false consensus of his own shortcomings. Perhaps, he was just socially awkward. That's not such a bad thing, once you admit it to yourself. He referred to his community as "petty". This is much like somebody who disagrees with what other are saying (e.g., in an online forum like this), and thus dismisses the community as a group of idiots, rather than using the disagreement as an opportunity for introspection.
