Companies Slowly Join Cloud Computing
- mhb 17y agoNASA wanted, among other things, to be able to inspect the hardware it was using; Amazon declined. Why would NASA want to inspect the computers?
- shrughes 17y agoThey want to make sure the hardware isn't broken.
- patio11 17y agoThis seems to be a bit of a mismatch between NASA engineering and the emerging trends in web scale computing: statistically speaking, the hardware is broken. That doesn't mean you can't get work done with it. This might be a wee bit of an adjustment to make if your engineering model is "four redundant systems which vote on outcomes plus a backup and SCRUB THE LAUNCH if anything looks anomalous."
- byoung2 17y agoOr they could just be paranoid that whatever they create on Amazon's infrastructure could turn into SkyNet...
- steveklabnik 17y agoI'm assuming as a government agency it'd want to make sure there wasn't any funny stuff going on, what with classified documents and whatnot.
- byoung2 17y agoThat's my guess...since they opted for a virtual private cloud, they were probably interested in seeing the firewall setup. The VPC would let them bridge their in-house network with an isolated Amazon cloud over VPN.
