One problem with selective leaking is that it tends to reduce the credibility of the leaker. If I filter the information I disclose, then inevitably it passes through the lens of my own biases and agenda. Whereas if I dump it all on w.l., that sort of signals that the info is not skewed. (This does not solve any of the ethical or moral issues raised by the author, mind you, but is a practical impediment to effectiveness of selective disclosure.)
