I wonder if you need to _buy_ cars when complete autonomous cars start to roll.
- AndrewDucker 10y agoSelf-driving taxis are the future. Far less waste when the vehicle isn't lying around all day taking up space and doing nothing.
- JshWright 10y agoI look forward to having to insert and remove three car seats for every short trip... EDIT: By 'car seat' I mean a seat for an infant/toddler/child.
- rwmj 10y agoI don't understand. Why would you need to remove the seats?
- iand 10y agoSo his children can sit in them in the next car.
- blastofpast 10y agoMy guess is child seats.
- rwmj 10y agoFair enough. It's high time that car manufacturers worked out how to make seats/seatbelts that are adaptable to all ages. Or perhaps some sort of foldaway "wings" which turn a standard seat into a child seat.
- ythl 10y ago"Car seat" in the US means an extra seat for infants that go on top of the car's native seat. https://www.amazon.com/baby-infants-car-seats-booster/b?ie=UTF8&node=166835011 https://www.amazon.com/baby-infants-car-seats-booster/b?ie=U...
- mkagenius 10y agoSpecialized cars may be fetched as an option in the app..
- AndrewDucker 10y agoCars for people with unusual needs are obviously going to continue being personally owned. But mosto of us will be delighted to have access to what is effectively an Uber only cheaper and more plentiful.
- JshWright 10y agoI'm not sure "having kids" is a particularly unusual need...
- mkagenius 10y ago3,952,841 babies born annually in the United States.. I don't know how long you need toddler seat, maybe 3 years? so, 12M families would like to own a car for 3 years.. (approx. multiple with number of children)
- JshWright 10y agoMost kids need some sort of seat until they are 8-10. http://www.cdc.gov/motorvehiclesafety/images/child_passenger_safety/vs_cps_share_image.png http://www.cdc.gov/motorvehiclesafety/images/child_passenger...
- nickjarboe 10y agoMaybe the cars will be safe enough we can get rid of those restrictive laws.
- artursapek 10y agoIt's not just about safety - a car seat is not ergonomically designed to accommodate a toddler.
- undersuit 10y ago>a car seat is not ergonomically designed to accommodate a toddler. Neither are church pews, why are you worried about ergonomically designed seats for toddlers? Daily 8 hour car rides? Or is it along the lines you are worried you won't be paying enough attention to your child and something horrible could... while you are not driving?
- artursapek 10y agoBecause churches aren't changing velocity all the time, causing your body to move around. Even with safer automatic cars, we'll still need seat belts. Have you ever tried strapping an adult seat belt onto a 2 year old?
- undersuit 10y agoWhy are cars changing velocity all the time? Not enough input and output on the conditions outside the car. Self driving cars don't have to drive like humans, they have to drive like 90% of the other cars. Remove the humans and self driving cars can adopt far more sophisticated traffic patterns than the simple stop/go of most city traffic.
- artursapek 10y agoEven 10 years from now, I predict we'll still be wearing seat belts. I guess we'll see who's right :)
- vinchuco 10y agoJust as we do for airplane seats
- netsharc 10y agoYou won't. Uber is a bit ahead of the game with the whole "Order a car" system, but car manufacturers should by now have realized that they need to be a tech and service company and not just a "goods" supplier. Hyper-exotics like Ferrari or Aston Martin can rely on driving enthusiasts to keep their brand alive, the others have to get self-driving tech and think about building an Uber-esque service. I can imagine Uber has a strong position of being able to sell their software/service to the manufacturers (the "Get a ride in a Mercedes" app will be the Uber app with Mercedes-branding, and it will run with Uber's servers), for a, say 5%, cut!
