Ask HN: Has anyone overcome addiction to distraction?
I am a slave to my phone / unproductive sites, and I don't know how to free myself, despite having read and tried so many tricks.
The three most promising ways of combating distraction that I've used is 1) hiding my phone in my bag, 2) using apps like self-control (helps even though I can undo it), and 3) going out to a study space.
Yet when I do all three, I feel overwhelming frustration for no articulable reason and somehow discover a new way of distracting myself: e.g. going to unblocked sites, and more disturbingly, leaving my study space early to eat even though I am not that hungry (some form of stress-eating or binging).
Have any of you found a way to escape this hell? I am scared that this will never change, and it is in complete conflict with my ambition. It's so humiliating to feel unable of working hard.
