(and there are valid reasons to use these, indeed I have them on phone and desktop).

Not with the author's example at least - I just tried it with f.lux to be sure, and the white background turns red (viewing it in the middle of the day I can barely believe it looks natural at night!) leaving the grey pretty much unchanged. I'd say it's an improvement, if anything.
