I'm by no means an expert in this area, but looking at your reasoning, perhaps antidepressants are suitable for people who are depressed but not suicidal. Every medicine has side effects. Every medicine has contraindications and is not suitable to a subset of the population which may want to use it. It looks like antidepressants are no different.
