OK, Maybe I should have been clearer. I said "there isn't any other useful way you could do it", so let me quantify that. If the iPhone did it any other way, I don't think I'd have bought an iPhone. If any touch screen device did it any other way, I'd seriously question the makers sanity. I didn't say there weren't other ways to control zoom on a touch screen, but IMHO all of the ideas you suggest are inferior, and less obvious - less useful. The obvious, intuitive one, is clearly pinch to zoom.
