As others in the NYT and HN comments have said, the best parenting strategy seems to depend on the psychology of the kid. My parents were more or less in the pussycat camp, which led me to put an enormous amount of pressure on myself as I felt like they just said that to be nice, because they knew I was "gifted" and would ultimately do "what they really wanted". It wasn't good for me mental health wise.
