I have had wrong code delivered on more than one occasion because of workflow of using tarballs and/or backup folders. If you are working on windows, there is no GUI better than TortoiseSVN. Give TortoiseSVN a try, it won't replace the #ifdef's; but it will certainly be better that tarballs for solo development.
