From the article:
"Higher wages were necessary, Ford realized, to retain workers who could handle the pressure and the monotony of his assembly line."
So in Ford's case, he was simply paying the going rate. Supply and demand. The lower wage wasn't enough to keep the workers he needed in his revolutionary assembly line. People spin this all the time to say things like: "He increased the wage so his workers could afford to buy his cars" But if it were as simple as that, he could have tripled or quadrupled their wages so they would buy even more or at a quicker rate.

What Ford realized was that workers were not simply replaceable cogs, but that each was on a spectrum of skills, experience, etc. He could have, like his competitors, continued to pay very little and gotten mostly the low-end quality workers. He'd have continued to make cars, but probably of lesser quality. He chose to pay the going rate for high quality workers.

With Globilization--they can build it in the cheapest country, and ship it to anyone around the world. What bothers me with American entrepreneurs who follow this business methodology is they took advantage of our school system, relatively safe neighborhoods, relatively fair legal system, and they turn around and build their widget in the cheapest chit hole country that pops up. And when things don't go their way they use our legal system/government to work out their dilemmas. And of course, they would never live in the country that makes their product? Except for tax purposes? At least have the decency to move to that country you make your widget in? I don't want people like you as my neighbor. It took a few moral/hard working generations to make a culture that could coddle entrepreneurs. Let's just see how long it will take for the system to break down/tarnish, and we turn into just another chit hole country? A country with desperate citizens. A country where people will do anything to make a buck. A county with no morals/ethics. I really find them disgusting. Sorry. I just do. I won't be back for the MBA's rebuttal. (Remember who paid for that line of thinking. Remember the generations before that sacrificed for your current theories. Remember that father with the good union job that is now pretty much gone. Argue with your kind.)
