Fivethirtyeight recently had a similar piece about how Gary Johnson could do the same via his home state of NM[0]. It's strange - Governor Johnson is polling much better overall than McMullin, and is actually on the ballot on all 50 states unlike McMullin, but McMullin works better "in the system" than Johnson. He's Republican (or republican flavored independent?) so it's less of a risk for the GOP to tacitly support him. Whereas if Johnson were to succeed at this gambit, that could be the beginning of the end for the Republican party so he won't get as much support from the GOP.
