For me it works well because of:
- Spellcheck
- WYSIWYG for complex/annoying markdown (try adding a column to a 20 row table in markdown unassisted)
- Nice unobtrusive typing experience
- Easy toggle switch to raw markdown (Ctrl + /)
- Syntax highlighting for code blocks
- Familiar hotkeys for formatting (Ctrl + B for bold, Ctrl + 1 for H1, Ctrl + 2 for H2 etc...)
