Is it practical to live in Atlanta without a car?
- wil421 10y agoYes if you live and work downtown but you'll be at a disadvantage. Atlanta is very much a car city especially if you have or want kids and want to live outside the city.
- guoqiang2 10y agoIf you live and work in those areas: Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead, Perimeter Mall, you don't need a car. The public commute system in Atlanta called MARTA, http://itsmarta.com/rail-map.aspx http://itsmarta.com/rail-map.aspx have a good train station coverage in those area. Grocery stores (CVS, Publix, Walgreen) are mostly nearby. Walk or bike should be enough.
- quantumhobbit 10y agoI had a car that I pretty much never used when I lived downtown. It was broken into and I didn't notice for a week. The only thing they stole was a 12-pack of Coca Cola, which is the most Atlanta thing ever. When I moved just a little further out the car was absolutely needed.
- elif 10y agoYeah, but especially if you plan it right. Over the last 6-8 years the bicycle infrastructure has blossomed, but only on pretty specific routes. If you both live and work along those routes, it is really easy (except for taxis and trucks shamelessly parking in the bike lane). That said, I don't live on one of those routes and don't really encounter much trouble cycling or boosted boarding on the roads.

- michaelcampbell 10y agoNot like it would be in NY or London, no. You can do it, and many do, but it's more work than most would consider "practical". Uber is pretty good though when you need it.
- cloakandswagger 10y agoAbsolutely not, and don't believe anyone who says otherwise. While I don't doubt that it is technically possible to get by in Atlanta without a car, your quality of life will be affected severely.
