not at all what I said or implied. I think this harassment is terrible, just like I think IRL mugging is terrible. I wouldn't ever suggest someone walk through a shady neighborhood IRL without protection (mace, etc) because they shouldn't "surrender"
The internet is still a dangerous place for everyone. If you want to pretend it's not, have fun and let me know how that works out for you.
- tptacek 10y agoI don't think you meant to imply it. I don't think anyone means it. But that's what they're saying. Men get to take credit without fear (they simply do: look at the front page of this site every day). Women don't. I'm not OK with it. Nobody should be OK with it.
- CaptSpify 10y agoMen do not. Women do get harassed more, from what I've seen, but men also get harassed. That is not what anyone is saying that I've seen. Nobody is saying it's OK. We are saying that's just how it is.
- xherberta 10y agoWhen it comes to getting hired or funded, being able to point to acclaimed articles, podcasts, code, etc. is an advantage. With a pen name, you have to get people to trust that the pen name = you to claim that street cred.
