When a person learns a language, they are making an investment of sorts - they are saying "I think this is a language that I will invest time into learning because ...". That "..." is usually (unfortunately) "it is becoming more popular and I will have a competitive edge being familiar with it before others". The bashing of other people's languages is a way of either (1) rooting for what you're invested in or (2) reassuring yourself you made a good investment.
