Sex and the single black woman
- byoung2 17y agoThere's another factor working against black women: the article mentions that 96% of Black women are married to Black men, but research by Dr. Julia Hare of San Francisco's Black Think Tank finds that 10% of Black men marry non-Black women.
- spamizbad 17y agoI can't cite where I've seen the statistics, but I recall seeing a similar discrepancy for other races in the United States. I suppose it's to be expected: women, compared to men, tend to face more pressure from their families (and society) to conform to "tradition."
- _delirium 17y agoIt seems there must be some race where the opposite's true? Sort of by definition, there have to be the same total number of women as men in heterosexual interracial couples...
- roel_v 17y agoIt is analyzed in quite a bit of detail on http://blog.okcupid.com/index.php/2009/10/05/your-race-affects-whether-people-write-you-back/ http://blog.okcupid.com/index.php/2009/10/05/your-race-affec... , maybe that's where you saw it; I think it was on HN for a while, too.
- dublinclontarf 17y agoHaven't got the numbers on hand, but the most common interacial relationships tend to be between white men and asian/oriental women followed by black men & white women. Followed by black men and asian women. At the bottom of the pile are black women and asian men, who are the liest likely to marry or have a relationship. From this data black women are the liest....attractive(is that the correct term? maybe popular?) ethnic grouping of women. Number one are white women followed by asian/oriental women. I'm married to a Chinese woman(living in China), and I'm white Irish(actual Irish, not "American Irish").
- byoung2 17y agoI'm Black, and I'm engaged to a Filipina, and my brother married a Mexican woman. I think the stereotype of the "Angry Black Woman" is partly responsible for scaring off men of all races. Just hear what this vocal minority of Black women have to say about themselves: http://theangryblackwoman.com/about/ http://theangryblackwoman.com/about/
- maxklein 17y agoI wish they would use the term "African American". The internet is global, and the 500 million other black people in the world are not affected by sentences like "Some 70% of black babies are born out of wedlock". The problems the article speaks about are relevant only to U.S-American-Born blacks or African Americans, and not black people in general.
- carbocation 17y agoThe problem with "African American" is that, in America, it is less general than "black." Black can encompass Afro-Caribbeans as well, for example. "American blacks" or "American-born blacks" might be phrases of high utility, since they seem to balance both of our concerns with over- or under-generalization.
- maxklein 17y agoI doubt that Afro-Caribbeans are being addressed in the article though. The article seems to be speaking about the U.S only.
- metamemetics 17y agoThere are many black people in the US who consider themselves culturally Caribbean and not African.
- maxklein 17y agoI doubt that African-Americans are culturally "african".
- metamemetics 17y agoThe term "African-American" clearly implies "African": it's one of only two words in the phrase! You just demonstrated that you are using it to refer to the concept of "black". This is a very poor choice as not everyone from Africa is black, and not everyone black is from or has parents from Africa. And if you are using the logic "well he obviously has SOME ancestor originally from Africa", technically EVERYONE does.
- beloch 17y agoProblem: 1 in 9 black men are in jail, 1 in 3 will wind up an ex-con. What's a black lady to do? Solution: Stop being a friggin' racist and try dating men who aren't black.
