iTunes runs on machines with RAM measured in the gigabytes, hard-drives in the terabytes, cooling fans and continuously or frequently connected power adaptors.
When you have those kinds of resources to slop around, then sure, you can spend them on abstractions that only serve the programmer's convenience.
