Mylan deserves our appreciation for inventing EpiPen when none of the other smarty pants who claim to make it in $30 bothered to help the needy.
- FireBeyond 10y agoBy inventing you mean buying the company that invented it. And then patenting some of the needle mechanics.
- smsm42 10y ago> why dont you create a company and sell it for $50 Patents. FDA. > Mylan deserves our appreciation for inventing EpiPen Mylan didn't invent EpiPen. A guy named Sheldon Kaplan[1] working for company named Survival Technology did. He didn't get any special money from it. After a long chain of acquisions the rights to EpiPen ended up in Mylan. They have nothing to do with its invention except that they paid money to buy rights to it. - tn13 10y agoThen why blame Mylan for "greed". I would do exact same thing so would almost 99.99% people out there. The patent and FDA is a problem not Mylan.
- projektir 10y agoThere are lots of people out there who are not driven purely by greed, stop projecting.
- smsm42 10y agoWell, I didn't :) As I noted in my other comment, high costs of patent medicine is an intentional feature of US medical system, but of course this system is prone to abuse and one can argue Mylan has crossed the line to abuse. FDA is a different aspect, also causing high price, and also intentional, but under the guise of "safety" - to the point that drugs and devices long approved and used in other countries are not allowed in the US, as if in US people have different physiology. This is what US citizens are paying for "better safe than sorry" - they are a tiny bit safer, but a lot more sorry for the high costs.
- tn13 10y ago> They have nothing to do with its invention except that they paid money to buy rights to it. That is like saying Google had not hand in success of Youtube because it was initially done by someone else. Dont you agree that Mylan deserves a hifi for making it useful and famous ?
- AstralStorm 10y agoNo, it was used and famous way earlier. Ditto YouTube and Google.
- smsm42 10y agoNope. They didn't make it useful (they didn't make it anything, they bought it as is) and as for famous, the only thing they made it famous for is as an example of runaway medical costs, which is hardly praise-worthy. Don't get me wrong, I don't object to the concept of private property, investment and profit. But I also don't feel particularly obligated to be thankful for something Mylan didn't actually do.
