It's the patcher part that is untrustable here. Also, where does Apple make the hash of the legit installer available?

  Welp, your alternative is end of life from Apple. Install Little Snitch, monitor usage, scan for viruses. I'm only giving you my anecdotal evidence, as well as 200 pages of responses on Macrumors.

    Apple still has security updates for yosemite. So sure you cannot run a supported version of macOS Sierra, but it is not EOL yet.
