As a fellow German please remember that these cases are reported more than 'normal' rape cases. It's a simple case of sample/selection, the most visible cases seem more frequent, thus more people focus on them, thus they get reported more. Think of the Russo-German girl in Berlin, where it turns out it was all just a false report (girl ran away from home and didn't want her parents angry when she came back, so claimed to have been abducted...), This was played ridiculously out of proportion, largely because Russian-funded media threw itself behind this case, even long after it was debunked.
Tl;dr: what is salient seems more frequent. Just like people think shark attacks and plane crashes are much more frequent than they are.
- s9w 10y agoThat might be the case if you follow this topic superficially on a national or continental level. But if you actually look at every single newspaper article and police report, I think you can get a pretty neutral look. And to be honest, a bias in the other direction is more than obvious in many cases. In my city it's almost common practice by newspapers to censor information like "Arabic speaking" from police search reports. Let that sink in. But I agree that you have to be careful, but both ways.
- readittwice 10y agoThat's the backlash you have since media didn't report any problems with asylum seekers in the beginning. How long did it took the german state TV to report about the events on last sylvester? IIRC about 4 days in today's world with Facebook, Twitter, E-Mail and Smartphones... They even had to apologize for that. BTW in Austria statistics show that non-citizens and asylum seekers are way over-represented in most criminal statistics, e.g. drug selling and violence.
