Something that bothers me about these drone cameras is that when people are using them in remote spots (i.e. the top of a hill or a lake at the base of a mountain in a national park) they generate a TON of noise. I went backpacking at Jefferson Park this summer and was woken up to the serene sounds of a quad-copter flying over our little lakeside spot. Lovely. Hopefully it doesn't scare off wildlife.
- biztos 10y agoMaybe it's time to learn the boomerang...
- baldfat 10y agoYou should camp in wilderness with a military base near by. Canoeing in a REMOTE lake and I get buzzed by 2 jet air craft. OR they decide to do night bombing on a site not used in 20 years a few miles away. That stuff is scary.
- pierotofy 10y agoReport it to the park's ranger. UAV operations are not allowed within U.S. National Parks.
- abakker 10y agoTechnically, I believe it is legal to fly a drone into a National Park, as long as you are not inside of the park while operating. From the NPS website, "Launching, landing, or operating an unmanned aircraft from or on lands and waters administered by the National Park Service within the boundaries of [insert name of park] is prohibited except as approved in writing by the superintendent." Because the FAA controls jurisdiction over the airspace, the NPS can't prevent UAV flights, but, they can regulate the operators.
- BHSPitMonkey 10y agoThen what is the meaning of the distinction "from or on" in the quote you provided?
- abakker 10y agoAccording to Marke Gibson, head of the FAA's UAS division, the "operating from or on" is referring to the pilot. I.e. the pilot can't be standing on NPS land, and cannot launch or land a drone on NPS land. This is a workaround that NPS came up with, and which is being used my most municipalities when they are banning drone operations. Source: Interdrone conference presentation by Marke Gibson that I attended 2 weeks ago.
- adrianpike 10y ago"from or on" means exactly that. "in the airspace above" is a separate distinction, and one they do not have control over.
- toomuchtodo 10y agoInteresting. I had never considered donating and helping the NPS setup flight restrictions in their airspace until this moment.
- adrianpike 10y agoTo the best of my understanding, the FAA maintains exclusive control over all airspace, so you'd want to donate specifically to get some collaboration going.
- toomuchtodo 10y agoRight, exactly! The NPS would have to request permanent TFR status from the FAA.
- jonknee 10y agoJefferson Park isn't a National Park...
- Fricken 10y agoHere's a teaser for the karma recording live sound in a library: https://youtu.be/6831JUHz_Wc https://youtu.be/6831JUHz_Wc
- fudged71 10y agoThat was probably filmed with the gimbal not the drone
- Fricken 10y agoThe shot begins up by the ceiling, and passes through a shelving unit. Maybe they used some kind of jiggery pokery to get that shot, but it would it be false advertising.
- adrianpike 10y agoNote how nobody's hair is flapping from the props. It's handheld, and an operator passed the gimbal through the shelves to another operator.
- martin-adams 10y agoI would tend to agree. Being that close to open props is not an accident I would like to see.
- abakker 10y agoIt is not legal to operate any drone from within a National Park Currently, so this shouldn't be much of an issue there. As for wildlife - http://www.nrcresearchpress.com/journal/juvs http://www.nrcresearchpress.com/journal/juvs - I saw a presentation by Dr. David Bird on the use of small drones / UAS for wildlife research and he said that his team had found them to be drastically less disruptive than other methods of research, and that animals became acclimatized to their presence very quickly. Obviously, that doesn't really answer the question as to wether there will be long term effects, but it seems that most animals get used to them/don't mind.
- TheGRS 10y agoThat's good to hear, I guess it does sort of sound like a swarm of bees :)
- BHSPitMonkey 10y agoThis happened to me while bouldering in Yosemite a couple weeks ago. A group of college kids launched their drone right beside me, hovered for a bit, and then fell and destroyed itself at my feet. So I guess the problem has ways of solving itself.
