dragonwriter tells you that the current version of Visual Studi CE (i.e., 2015) is not time limited unlike 2013's, and you come back with a link about Visual Studio 2013 community.
I feel like you've missed something.
- justinclift 10y agoNo, I just don't believe dragonwriter is correct. The 2013 page does not say it's a trial version, nor time limited either. Why would anyone believe the 2015 version is any different? This is the text from the 2013 Community Edition page: Visual Studio Community 2013 is a free, full-featured IDE with powerful coding productivity features, cross-platform mobile development tools for Windows, iOS and Android, and access to thousands of extensions. This edition of Visual Studio is available at no cost for non-enterprise application development. See anything there about trial version, time limits, etc? No? Me neither.
- dogma1138 10y agoEven the 2013 is not a trial, it is not time limited, you have likely installed the trial version of the full installation if you are using the online client and not the ISO it asks you what version you want to install. I have both of them installed on a VM, works offline no problems, you can even cache the MSDN library for offline use =)
- justinclift 10y agoI really wish this was the case, but it's not. :(
- dogma1138 10y agoIt is, you only have to register it once during the installation there is no requirement for it to be online or for you to be kept signed in.
- dragonwriter 10y agoI misunderstood your complaint and you seemed to be talking about a time-limited trial, not the no-cost registration requirement, but as I reread your post (maybe its been edited, maybe I just didn't read it right the first time) its very clear that that's what you were complaining about. And, so I thought you were talking about the earlier time-limited trials, and not Community Edition's registration requirement. So, you are correct that 2013 CE and 2015 CE both require a no-cost registration -- I still find it odd that you would decry this as being something other than a free-as-in-gratis IDE, or that you would describe it as "scum marketing".
- justinclift 10y agoTo me, any application/program (etc) which says it's free, then some time later (with literally no warning) stops working unless you register with a valid email... is a scummy way of email harvesting. Just because it's large, well known company doing it doesn't make it non-scummy. As I said, maybe that's just my way of looking at things. ;)
- rasz_pl 10y agowhat part of: "Visual Studio Frequently Asked Questions Visual Studio 2015 Community Edition is telling me my trial has expired. Do I have to pay for Community edition? No, Community edition is free to use. We use the same infrastructure that allows you to unlock VS w/ an online subscription to manage the requirement of signing into Community edition so some of our strings overlap cross these scenarios. _Trial here means the period you can use the community edition before you must sign in_ to fully unlock the IDE." dont you understand?
