PerfView Is Now Open Source on GitHub
- HugoDaniel 10y ago** random comment on how microsoft has changed **
- justinclift 10y agoHmmm... in the article is says: "You can download a free copy of Visual Studio 2015 Community Edition ..." If that's anything like the "free" version of MSVC 2013, then 30 days after installing it... it suddenly stops working until you register with MS (using valid email, etc). No warning, no notice... it just stops and pops up a notice when you try and use it. Personally, I call that extremely scummy marketing, not "free". Maybe that's just me though.
- dragonwriter 10y agoIts not at all like the free trial downloads of Visual Studio 2013 and earlier; Visual Studio Community Edition is free and not time limited, but its license restricts its use to (from memory) solo devs, small (< 5 developer) shops, open source work (with unlimited team size), and education.
- rasz_pl 10y agonah, its exactly like 2013 one. It will stop working if you try using it offline (in a VM for example) and will demand online access and microsoft account login.
- dogma1138 10y agoyou just skip it, it will show a yellow warning sign and you won't have access to the MSDN info and a few other things which is pretty much like how the full version of VisualStudio works offline...
- rasz_pl 10y agoseriously WTF people? http://stackoverflow.com/questions/32235116/visual-studio-community-2015-expiration-date/32236987#32236987 http://stackoverflow.com/questions/32235116/visual-studio-co...

- rasz_pl 10y agoyes, you bought this "free version" with your email/identity. Its right there on your pictu... oh, why did you black out your credentials? Do you consider them somehow precious all of a sudden?
- dogma1138 10y agoDo you give up a phone number to your employer, insurance provider, credit card company? wanna share it? Also you do realize that you can set up a disposable email address in 10 seconds right? I didn't use one because I don't consider this instance to be a violation of my privacy, privacy isn't about keeping information secret, privacy is about you having the agency to decide who you share it with.
- justinclift 10y agoIn the 2013 edition, there is no "skip it". Any action other than signing in/registering just closes MSVC. If there's some way around that, please I'm all ears. :)
- dogma1138 10y agoEh yes there is, you just register it once and you sign out, you do not have to be signed in. Here it is http://imgur.com/u8BiQZ9 http://imgur.com/u8BiQZ9 no trial no nothing, I don't know what you are really complaining about....
- justinclift 10y agoVisual Studio Community Edition is exactly what I'm talking about. That's the scum marketing version which stops working after 30 days until registered. If you don't believe me, then actually try it: https://www.visualstudio.com/downloads/download-visual-studio-vs Under the "Visual Studio 2013" option on the left, choose "Community 2013". This will bring up a "Visual Studio Community 2013 with Update 5" view. Download the ISO and install from there. 30 days later, it will stop unless you register. I know this for sure, having had this exact thing happen when writing up our instructions here: https://github.com/sqlitebrowser/sqlitebrowser/wiki/Setting-up-a-Win64-development-environment-for-DB4S I have snapshots of the VM and all the downloads used while doing it. It's absolutely the Community Edition doing this.
- pikzen 10y agodragonwriter tells you that the current version of Visual Studi CE (i.e., 2015) is not time limited unlike 2013's, and you come back with a link about Visual Studio 2013 community. I feel like you've missed something.
- justinclift 10y agoNo, I just don't believe dragonwriter is correct. The 2013 page does not say it's a trial version, nor time limited either. Why would anyone believe the 2015 version is any different? This is the text from the 2013 Community Edition page: Visual Studio Community 2013 is a free, full-featured IDE with powerful coding productivity features, cross-platform mobile development tools for Windows, iOS and Android, and access to thousands of extensions. This edition of Visual Studio is available at no cost for non-enterprise application development. See anything there about trial version, time limits, etc? No? Me neither.
- dogma1138 10y agoEven the 2013 is not a trial, it is not time limited, you have likely installed the trial version of the full installation if you are using the online client and not the ISO it asks you what version you want to install. I have both of them installed on a VM, works offline no problems, you can even cache the MSDN library for offline use =)
- rasz_pl 10y agoI wonder why plaintext github link?
- bratsche 10y agohttps://github.com/Microsoft/perfview https://github.com/Microsoft/perfview there you go.
- scardine 10y agoFor anyone wondering what is PerfView like I was, let me spare you a trip to google: > PerfView is a performance-analysis tool that helps isolate CPU and memory-related performance issues. > PerfView is a performance analysis tool focusing on ETW information (ETL files) as well as CLR memory information (heap dumps). It can collect and view ETL in a variety of ways. Powerful grouping operators allow you to understand performance profiles in ways other tools can't. PerfView is used internally at Microsoft by a number of teams and is the primary performance investigation tool on the .NET Runtime team. Features include: > - Non-invasive collection - suitable for use in live, production environments > - Xcopy deployment - copy and run Memory > - Support for very large heaps (gigabytes) Snapshot diffing > - Dump files (.dmp) > - CPU Performance > - Support for managed, native, and mixed code > - Can read XPerf logs > - Profile diffing https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=28567 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=285...
- rusanu 10y agoOn the topic of ETW is worth mentioning UIforETW [0] and in general Bruce Dawson's blog [1]. [0] https://github.com/google/UIforETW https://github.com/google/UIforETW [1] https://randomascii.wordpress.com/ https://randomascii.wordpress.com/
