For a personal project I used MongoDB over MySQL for somewhat faster prototyping. I was collecting a lot of data from the X display server during runtime and storing it into a database for querying later. Since there were a lot of different types of messages and I wasn't sure about which parts I wanted to keep, rather than building tables for each of them I converted them to JSON and piped them into a MongoDB collection. I know this is not a good example compared to a production issue, however I think the reducing the amount of time need to get started with a project is very useful over something that needs a lot of configuring before it can be used.
