Not sure it's fair calling it a myth because the Daily Mail et al don't understand it. They have a long history of misunderstanding.
What does surprise me is the various images we've seen of beaches, knee deep in often exported first world garbage, in the developing world. Surprise as they have never been the trigger for us to do something concrete to response.
- mikeash 10y agoA bunch of trash in the ocean hurts dolphins, whales, seals, and other cute animals. A bunch of trash on third-world beaches just hurts crabs and poor people.
- anexprogrammer 10y ago...and doesn't get into the ocean as beaches are in no way connected to the sea?
- coldtea 10y agoA bunch of trash only enough to fill a beach is a drop in the bucket compared to the ocean even if it gets to it.
