I had the same experience in 10th grade (in France we switch school in the 10th grade). I had been bullied the two previous years and when 10th grade started I punched the first kid who bullied me. No one bullied me after that. Of course, this only works in an environment without weapons and without excessive escalation. I'm not sure it applies to girls though, being violent for a guy is considered by other kids as manly and earns respect. If a girl snaps and punches another girl, she'll be seen as crazy and most likely bullied even more than before.
