Personally, I think it would be a more valuable learning experience for the students if git basics were intentionally not taught in a class but still required. As a professional developer, you're going to have to figure out how to do whatever it is you don't already know how to do all the time. For those that haven't already cultivated this skill, university should be a place that pushes you to learn that lesson.
