I have a friend who is a sergeant in the LAPD. She was asking me a question and followed it up with something about trying to not seem stalkerish, and I made a joke about "isn't that what NCIC (National Crime Information Computer) is for?" She comes back a few minutes later and tells me that she finds much more information on the internet than she could ever find through NCIC.
