Given how many smartphones with broken screens I see, it seems like a case is pretty much essential these days, whatever the phone is coated in. Completely anecdotal, of course, but I'd guess something like 20% of phones I see have a cracked screen. I suppose there's little incentive for the manufacturers to make their devices more robust.
