I've run out of gas twice, both times in the beater I had as a teenager. On the first occasion, the fuel gauge failed, so I thought I still had gas. I got used to that after a while. I knew how many mpg I got, and how much gas I'd put in the tank. Then my odometer failed (I told you it was a beater!). Without that, I was up the creek.
