Thank you for mentioning this - I haven't found time to watch the full keynote and probably will not do so, and I did wonder how annoying it would be to use just one AirPod at a time, so's not to block both ears and severely hamper my situational awareness. It sounds from what you say like this is a use case they've put some thought into, and that's good to know.
