I think it's also personal preference/habit. With a credit card, at the end of the week, I always have to check and see what I've done to myself. If I start the week with $500 in $100 bills (the particular amount doesn't matter) in my pocket, and I'm out before the end of the week, it's a sign that I need to take it easy for a day or three. I'm sure I could adjust to having to keep closer track in my head (or on my smart phone), but this is simple and it works for me.
I'm guessing the guy has a bank account, regular direct-deposit income, good credit, shops in places where they take credit cards, and has some financial literacy that helps him keep that all straight. Anyone missing any of these would prefer to have the cash option available to them at least some of the time. (All of which is in agreement with your 'classist' claim against the author.)
