Isn't there a patent or copyright issue involved here?
- JshWright 10y agoNo, there is basically zero commonality between this device and the EpiPen (this is a bad idea for a number of other reasons though...)
- serge2k 10y agoFailure rate is unknown. Consequences of failure are nasty, up to and including death.
- JshWright 10y agoNot to mention the whole "injecting glass into yourself" thing. It's no less complicated than simply drawing up the medication from a rubber topped vial. It's still a bunch of things you have to unpack at the time you need it (the syringe, stopcock, and needle will all need to remain in their packaging until they're used). There are a ton of downsides...
- jxramos 10y agoI'm curious how they keep the vials sterile, I guess you can't really handle them until the day of and then do so with gloves on.
- tonetheman 10y agoFailure rate for not being able to afford it from douche nozzle American company is pretty high too.
- jolux 10y agoThis shit takes five steps to work properly and looks extremely delicate as well. How are you supposed to carry this around safely? The 3D printed part is basically a giant lever for breaking the three way stopcock into three parts. I'm not even sure this does more good than harm to be quite honest. What happens if using this thing incorrectly kills you? Given it's so hard to use, it's pretty easy to see that happening.
- tonetheman 10y agoI agree with you, it does look wonky. Maybe in person it would be better. Honestly I am just pissed at the greed that drove the issue more than anything.
- zo1 10y agoHave a look at this Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epinephrine_autoinjector https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epinephrine_autoinjector People and competitors have been trying to, and some have, gotten FDA approval for alternatives. Greed itself is not inherently bad; greed could be the thing driving you to choose one of the alternatives over the EpiPen. Or perhaps reform the FDA rules that led to this situation in the first place.
