you don't even need to run the gui and do all the greaskmonkey stuff, its overkill. just set up fbida (https://www.kraxel.org/cgit/fbida/ https://www.kraxel.org/cgit/fbida/) its available packaged in most distros and you can set up the slideshow right through the command line using the framebuffer to show the images. I've built several picture frames this way.
