Truffle oil is usually a sign of an amateur chef, but I would disagree it has no place. Most people abuse it and I would include truffle fries on the list. It's a bitter and inferior truffle flavor. However, I love finishing white mushroom pizzas with by distributing 10-15 drops of truffle oil on a medium pie. Clearly, it's not the same as shaving truffles, but it actually works well when the oil isn't cooked and it's paired with a combination of fresh and earthy flavors.
