  Lesson #1: Don't try to preserve social harmony by delaying indefinitely the consequences of bad company decisions. Clean up quickly and effectively instead. It seems like most countries have learned the lesson (or have never had to) and avoided the mistakes Japan has made, although the EU is headed in vaguely similar directions.
