Apple's AirPods are smart wireless earbuds with a new W1 chip
- archagon 10y agoLightning and proprietary wireless standards are "the future"? Garbage. Apple is segregating the audio market. If you truly believe in your tech, make it an open standard. The future will not be owned by a single corporation.
- chris_7 10y agoWired headphones: - "Just work" - Never run out of batteries (in less time than a cross-country flight!) - Have impeccable audio quality (well, not AirPods, but...) - Can be hung on your neck for a quick conversation - Are protected from falls by the cord
- freddyc 10y agoAdd to that: never get separated so that you always have two earbuds! I see these quickly becoming an annoyance when you can find one earbud but for the life of you can't locate the other.
- k-mcgrady 10y agoConsidering the shortish battery life and the fact the case is a battery pack I suspect most people will always have the case with them and always put them into the case when not using them. That might limit this problem.
- jonknee 10y agoI love that I can keep earbuds in a pocket, but there's no way I can keep a case like that in my pocket. I guess I'll be using the included dongle.
- benologist 10y agoWireless headphones also: - never get tangled with themselves, my arms, legs, feet, shoes, equipment etc at my desk or running or working out or taking a dump or anywhere else - let me listen to my music anywhere in my apartment without caring where my phone is - never bring my phone crashing to the floor when I get up without accounting for the cable Lots of pros and cons either way.
- k-mcgrady 10y ago>> "- Are protected from falls by the cord" The wire also tends to be the CAUSE of the fall. Earphones never just 'fall out' of my ear randomly.
- chris_7 10y agoTry to run with EarPods and (depending on the size of your ear, perhaps) it will happen. I do use custom UE IEMs so that isn't an issue for me. However, my main concern is accidentally dropping them when removing them - if they fall on the subway tracks, they're gone, and if they fall on the ground, there's no way I'm putting that back in my ear without sterilizing it.
- k-mcgrady 10y agoThat's true, I didn't consider people exercising.
- dordoka 10y agoI do understand that is just my case, but it seems that I have smaller ears (and consecuently, smaller ear conducts) than the average person. I cannot wear the Apple earphones because they don't fit firmly: they're moving constantly (which generates noise that I hear) AND they tend to fall from my ears, even just sitting down in my computer and moving my head slightly. I would love to get rid of the cables, but airpods would be even a bigger problem, because at least with the cord they won't hit the floor. I usually employ in-ear earphones, which come in different sizes and that resolves my problem. TL;DR: it's not only sports/exercise, there's people with smaller ears :)
- sz4kerto 10y agoPoor Bragi.
- k-mcgrady 10y agoIf these work as well as they say they will I'm pretty excited about them. Making the case a battery pack was a pretty cool solution to the limitations on battery size such a small device has. I was worried about damage if they fall out but after thinking about it the only time my EarPods fall out is when my arm catches the wire so I guess they should be fine.
- cobookman 10y agoNew business idea, sell a lightning male to mini jack male cable allowing a lot of high end headphones to simply convert by replacing their cables.
- jonknee 10y ago... That connector is already included in the box of every iPhone 7.
- cobookman 10y agoThey have a lightening to female mini jack. Not a 3-6ft lightening to male mini jack.
- teknologist 10y agoOr, better yet, a wireless dongle to male mini jack. The guts of these things have to be small/light enough to clip to the side of a high-end set.
- claar 10y agoPrice just revealed, $159. Seems about $100 high to me.
