In addition to its other uses, given the anecdotal reports of kratom’s usefulness in treating opioid addiction—which I’ve seen in a few close friends—I believe we have an ethical obligation to oppose this ban and encourage further research. I’ve never touched opioids before—a friend gaped when I told them that I threw away perfectly good Vicodin after getting my wisdom teeth out! But I have used kratom occasionally for a few months, and it’s been an incredible relief of nerve pain, anxiety, sleeplessness, and desire to drink alcohol. I hope that it continues to be available to people who need it much more than I do.
