"why is age discrimination a problem?"
In my opinion, people get used to everything, bad times and good times. People that have been fortunate enough become entitled to it and believe the world needs to sustain their lifestyle forever, if necessary by law.
I was extremely lucky in my twenties and could earn as much as an experienced professional at the end of his career. I was educated, young and brilliant, tall and attractive, traveled person who speak several languages and hard working who dominated the new technologies.
This was something like a dream, not possible before technology made it a reality for me to compete with old people.
You simply get used to the lifestyle and believe it is normal. But as you get older of course if companies could replace you with young people, they will. This fact that you loved when you were young and benefited you, now looks like a treat to your lifestyle.
I continue being lucky(and I have my own business), but I have seen people make assumptions about their luck being eternal, with bad consequences.
Like football players or film actors that could earn tens of millions of dollars in a year. Instead of realizing how lucky they have been they start believing they deserve it. When they stop playing sports or a famous actress is replaced with someone younger, they get depressed, become drug or alcohol addicts...
