Landing vertically is very similar to taking off vertically in terms of the physical requirements of the vehicle. If you want to land like a plane, you need a much more complex design, which is almost certainly worse at taking off. So as long as you can work out how to control it reliably, vertical landing is a lot more efficient than horizontal landing.
