It is my firm belief that if you don't have a side project, you will always remain where you are. Take up a hobby, acquire a new skill, face a new challenge, come up with something new.. whether you make money doing it or you learn something new, a side project will help you understand your capabilities and limitations.
- adamwi 10y agoFor my part I have instead switched professional track when I feel that I need new challenges to develop (Physics => Mgmt consulting => Start-up founder). But I guess it is less risk with side projects and you need to have/create opportunities to enable switches in professional life.
