I prefer a motorcycle and sleeping homestays in Himalayas. Just finished my first 10,000 km ride from Sikkim to Kathmandu to Uttarakhand, Himachal, Kashmir, Zanskar, Ladakh, etc. It is cheaper, but sometimes a bit tough, when you have to cross a cold stream a half of meter deep..)
