On a newer ThinkPad — X240 (Haswell), battery life under FreeBSD -CURRENT is close to 9 hours. Doesn't resume from suspend though. But yours should! I know people got suspend/resume working on 20 and 30 ThinkPads.
Here's my post about the laptop: https://unrelenting.technology/articles/freebsd-on-the-thinkpad-x240 https://unrelenting.technology/articles/freebsd-on-the-think... — not fully up to date though: I'm using ZFS only now, with boot environments (no GRUB required, it's fully integrated into the FreeBSD EFI loader), and powerd++ https://github.com/lonkamikaze/powerdxx https://github.com/lonkamikaze/powerdxx
Brightness works great with Intel graphics. I haven't been able to adjust brightness using the nvidia driver (on an iMac)
- eriknstr 10y agoThanks for your blog post. I'm going to try the power management things you did for your laptop and see how they work for my model. I too use root on ZFS. Boot environments and using powerd++ are things I've been meaning to but have not yet got around to.
- floatboth 10y agoHonestly I'm not seeing any improvement from powerd++, normal powerd worked fine for this dual-core + HT processor.
