Unholy Roman Emperor
- zeveb 10y agoGreat article, but: > By 59 AD > in 64 AD The appropriate phrases are, of course, 'by AD 59' & 'in AD 64' (I'll give 'in the early third century AD' a pass, although 'in the early third century' is more correct).
- kwhitefoot 10y agoReaders who don't have any Latin might wonder why AD should come first. In English it means 'year of our Lord' so AD 64 is really short for 'Anno ab incarnatione Domini sexaginta quattuor'. Of course within the Christian west (even for atheists like me) it is really not necessary the use AD at all 'the year 64' will do. And finally it is no longer politically correct to say AD; CE or Common Era is the modern term.
- cafard 10y agoIt would look at little odd to give the dates of the Seven Years War with either AD or CE. But when you get down to the early Roman empire, many of us find the era helpful.
- pan69 10y agoGreat article. I also loved watching Mary Beard's documentaries on the Roman Empire. She's such a great character: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYjnRAFFy4g https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYjnRAFFy4g
