Tesla's new 100kWH battery makes Ludicrous Mode even more ludicrous
- serge2k 10y ago> Tesla's Model S is now the third-fastest car in the world, going from 0 to 60 MPH in just 2.5 seconds. That's only just slower than the Ferrari LaFerrari and the Porsche 918 Spyder The Porsche also does > 0-200 km/h (120 mph) in 7.2 seconds, 300 kilometres per hour (190 mph) in 19.9 seconds and a tested top speed of 218 miles per hour (351 km/h). Plus it can corner. Third fastest in the world seems a bit of a stretch. 0-60 acceleration, sure.
- hundchenkatze 10y agoYeah, fastest implies it's third fastest around any track. It should read third-fastest to 60 mph.
- kazinator 10y agoThat's similar to when we call the world record holder in a 100m sprint the "fastest man in the world", ignoring the fastest 400m person, 800m person, 1500m person, 3km person, ... marathoner, ...
- kazinator 10y agoAlso, while this may be due to the new battery, it's not simply its kiloWatt-hours capacity which does that. It must be that the battery can also deliver more kiloWatts. A battery storing way fewer kWh could yet support even greater acceleration, just by dumping current faster (and perhaps also by weighing less). A super-capacitor bank which is completely drained after 10 seconds could support the 2.5s long operation needed to demonstrate 0-60 acceleration. (But, of course, better acceleration and range: well done!)
- beachstartup 10y agoi think the 991 turbo S is a more apt comparison in terms of price. it's also is tested at 2.5s 0-60, will certainly outrun the tesla over long distances and top speed, and can launch 50 times in a row, at least (this is probably only limited by gasoline). it's also very fast around a track, which you can lap repeatedly, many times, on a single tank of gas. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5DRCTW-Q7o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5DRCTW-Q7o the tesla is an amazing vehicle but it's not the same thing as a high end sports car which was built to give maximum performance with high endurance over long distances. all of the sports car stuff came out of F1 and LeMans and FIA rally research and development. a tesla isn't designed to do any of those things. it's designed to take you to work or your weekend destination really, really fast and in comfort and then take you home and sit charging overnight. and clearly it does that job excellently but people insist on comparing to other use cases which is just dumb. it's like comparing a pickup truck to a 918 spyder.
