Well... all the things like DBus and /usr/lib and Boost and ioctls and SMF and signals and volatile variables and prototypal inheritance and C99FEATURES_ and dpkg and autoconf that he's complaining about were originally conceived as a way to simplify something that their respective authors considered too complex in the first place.
