I think the idea of having a powerful scripting language based on JS is a godsend in many ways. But like you, I also feel that async is a bad default for a language that has such widespread use. I love being able to use one syntax to write 95% of my code(instead of having to switch between JS / python / php etc.) but some of NodeJS's programming and ecosystem realities are annoying to say the least.
