Half of their revenue is groceries, not their income (what they earn on their sales). Grocery stores, and I am sure even Wal-Mart, operate on razor-thin margins. For many years A&P was considered the top dog to beat - their net profit margin was 1.06% (for every $100 in sales they made $1.06, in other words).
